About this mojito recipe: pitcher for a crowd

While I love to entertain, I’m someone who also likes to be part of the party. I’m not the type to want to stay tucked away in the kitchen or hang out behind the bar making one mixed drink at a time. If I have people over, it’s because I actually wanna hang out with them, you know?

So, whenever I have friends or family over for some festive merrymaking, I always turn to big batch cocktails by the pitcher. Specifically, these mojitos by the pitcher. That way, I can knock out at least one full round of drinks in a single go and let my guests serve themselves at will.

Why you’ll love this batch cocktail recipe

This easy mojito pitcher drink is a favorite of mine because it’s:

  • Quick & Easy! You just need a few simple, easy to find ingredients and 5 minutes to make this pitcher of mojitos recipe.
  • Super Versatile! This mojitos pitcher recipe is easily customizable. If alcohol isn’t your jam, simply nix the rum to make this a mocktail mojito. Or add fresh berries for a fruity cocktail. The possiblities are endless.
  • Light & Refreshing! Pitcher mojitos are the cool, refreshing sipper you need!
  • Perfect for entertaining! Mojito on the go and make your pitcher ahead of time for parties!

Ingredients & Substitutions

Making this easy mojito recipe for a pitcher only requires 6 simple ingredients. Here’s what to grab:

  • Water – To make the simple syrup. If possible, use filtered water for the cleanest tasting mojito batch recipe.
  • Granulated Sugar – For sweetening the simple syrup.
    • Substitution: If you’re on a refined sugar-free kick like me, feel free to swap in agave nectar, honey, or coconut sugar to make your simple syrup.
  • Mint Leaves – Fresh mint is crucial for the ideal mint flavor when making a proper mojito.
    • Substitution: Try shaking things up by trading in Thai basil instead of mint.
  • Good-Quality White Rum – Make sure you don’t accidentally grab coconut vodka (like Malibu) or you’ll end up with a drink that is far too sweet.
    • Substitution: Feel free to swap in your favorite vodka if you prefer a vodka mojito by the pitcher.
  • Fresh Lime Juice – Bottled lemon and lime juices might be convenient, but they’re also less bright and more lackluster in flavor.
    • Substitution: If you absolutely, positively MUST use bottled lime juice, reach for Nellie’s Famous Key Lime Juice, which tastes pretty darn close to the real thing. You can also use a blend of fresh lemon and lime juice if you need.
  • Club Soda – For effervescence.
    • Substitution: Feel free to use sparkling mineral water like Topo Chico or your favorite brand of seltzer instead.

Variations: Mojitos

This batch mojito recipe is endlessly customizable. Below are some ideas to get your started:

  • Virgin Mojito – Omit the rum for a delicious non-alcoholic mojito mocktail.
  • Raspberry Mojitos – Add a pint of rinsed fresh raspberries to the pitcher and muddle the fruit before adding the simple syrup, rum, and simply syrup.
  • Strawberry Mojito – Same as above; just use strawberries instead of raspberries.

Mojito pitcher garnishes

This is where you can get creative with your flavor variations and really make this mint mojito pitcher recipe your own. In the summer I love to add fresh fruit; however, mint leaves and lime slices are the traditional garnish. Below are a few delicious mojito garnish ideas to help get your culinary juices going:

  • Mint sprigs & lime slices are traditional
  • Cucumber coins add a refreshing touch
  • Berries, such as fresh or frozen raspberries, strawberries or blueberries will add more color and flavor to your alcoholic beverage.

How to make mojitos in a pitcher

Large batching your mint mojito cocktails and making them in a pitcher is the stress-free way to serve drinks to a crowd. Thankfully, it’s super easy to do! Here’s how to make the best mojito recipe:

  1. Homemade mint simple syrup: Add water, granulated sugar and mint leaves to a small saucepan. Place the pan over medium heat and bring to a simmer while stirring. Continue to simmer, stirring, until the sugar is completely dissolved, about 1 minute. Remove from heat and let the simple syrup steep for 5-10 minutes.
  2. Strain syrup into pitcher: Hold a fine mesh strainer over a pitcher and strain the mint syrup into the pitcher, discarding mint leaves. Place the pitcher in the refrigerator to fully chill, about 30 minutes.
  3. Start mojito cocktails: Pour the white rum and fresh lime juice into the pitcher with the simple syrup. Stir to combine.
  4. Just before serving, add finishing touches: To the pitcher, add a handful of mint sprigs and lime slices, along with cucumber coins and fresh berries if using. Then, pour the club soda or sparkling water into the pitcher just before serving.
  5. Serve: Fill cocktail glasses with ice, mint leaves and lime wedges. Pour the rum and mint mojito from the pitcher into the glass over ice and enjoy!

Tips for the best mojitos at home

  • Sugar-free: I am on a refined sugar-free kick, so I typically use agave to make my simple syrup. That said, I wrote this classic mint mojito recipe using regular sugar since it’s cheaper and more likely to be in more pantries. However, if you can swap out the simple syrup for agave syrup in a 1:1 ratio.
  • Store your simple syrup in a squeeze bottle to keep your fridge and counters free from the sticky sweet liquid.
  • Garnishing your pitcher mojito cocktails with frozen berries is an excellent idea since they add a burst of color and make fantastic ice cubes that won’t water down your drink.
  • Feel free to make your ice cubes fancy by freezing berries, fresh herbs, or edible flowers in them.

FAQs: Mojito recipe, easy!

Should I add ice to my pitcher of mojitos?

I actually suggest keeping ice out of the mojito pitcher and instead keeping an ice bucket on the bar next to your serving station. This way, people can serve themselves at their own pace without you worrying about the ice melting and diluting your lovely mint mojito recipe.

How many glasses are in a pitcher of cocktails?

Well, that all depends on how heavy you pour them! I mean, you *could* just add a straw and call it one, right? 😂But in all seriousness, this mojito pitcher recipe yields between 6-8 cocktails.

How long do mojitos stay good?

So long as you hold off on adding your bubbles until you’re ready to serve, you can mix up the other rum mojito ingredients up to 3-4 days in advance.

Serving mojito pitchers

If you’re hosting a get-together, make sure you make life easy on yourself! I like to set up a minty mojito drink station so guests can serve themselves. I usually include:

  • A cooler filled with ice and non-alcoholic beverages for the kids, DDs, and sober curious.
  • A cooler filled with ice, beers, hard seltzers, and bottles of white and rose wines for the adults.
    • Tip: I usually tuck the coolers under the serving table or put them at either end so they don’t take up too much room.
  • On the tabletop, have cocktail glasses & wine glasses, an ice bucket with tongs, cocktail napkins, at least one style of big batch cocktail in a pitcher, straws, glass charms or decals (so you keep dishes to a minimum), and an assortment of garnishes. This is also where you should put any handles of booze, bottles of red, and basic mixers for folks to serve themselves.
  • There’s a reason most bars are required to offer some kind of food: people tend to get way more intoxicated way more quickly without it! Make sure you also have what I call a “grazing table” so folks can munch while they sip.

Food to complement your cocktails!

A pitcher of mojitos pairs deliciously with many appetizers and finger foods. I  recommend pairing your mojito cocktail with foods that are light, citrusy and/or refreshing. Below are some dishes to serve with your mojitos at your next gathering:

Storing mojito recipe with rum

Mint simple syrup can be made up to 2 weeks in advance and kept in the fridge.

Feel free to mix all the ingredients for this mint mojito recipe, except for the club soda and any garnishes, up to 3-4 days in advance and keep it in the fridge.

If you have any leftovers consider freezing them into boozy popsicles or ice cubes for future adult treats.

As the great F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, “Here’s to alcohol, the rose-colored glasses of life.” May your days be ever rosy, my friends! Until next time, cheers!

Equipment

  • 1 Small Saucepan (for simple syrup)
  • 1 Fine-Mesh Strainer (for straining simple syrup)
  • 1 Pitcher (for mojitos)

Ingredients

Mint Simple Syrup: (yield = 1 cup)

Mojito Cocktails:

  • 2 Cups Good-Quality White Rum (16 ounces) (SEE NOTES)
  • 1 Cup Fresh Lime Juice (about 6-8 limes) (SEE NOTES)
  • 2 Cups Club Soda or Soda Water (16 ounces)
  • Optional Garnishes: Mint Sprigs and Lime Slices Cucumber Coins, Fresh Raspberries, Strawberries or Blueberries

Instructions

  • Make simple syrup: To a small saucepan, add the water, sugar, and mint leaves. Place the pan over medium heat and bring to a rapid simmer while stirring frequently. Reduce the heat to maintain a simmer and cook, stirring, until the sugar completely dissolves, about 1 minute. Remove the simple syrup from the heat and let it steep for 5-10 minutes.
  • Strain syrup into pitcher: Hold a fine mesh strainer over a large pitcher and strain the mint syrup into the pitcher, discarding mint leaves.
(Optional but recommended: Place the pitcher in the refrigerator to fully chill, about 30 minutes.)
  • Start the mojito pitcher: To the pitcher with the simple syrup, add the rum and lime juice. Stir to combine.
(Making your pitcher in advance? Cover the top of your mojito pitcher with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.)
  • Just before serving, add finishing touches: Add mint springs and slices or wedges of lime, along with the slices of cucumber and/or fresh berries if using. Gently pour in the club soda right before serving.
  • Serve: Fill cocktail glasses with ice, a few mint leaves and a lime wedge of two. Pour the mojitos from the pitcher over ice in glasses. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Rum substitution: You can swap out the white rum for your favorite vodka if you prefer a vodka mojito.
  • Lime Juice: Make sure you use fresh lime juice for the best mojito cocktail; the stuff in a bottle is convenient, but it’s also lackluster in flavor.
  • Ice: I recommend adding ice to the cocktail glasses versus the pitcher, this way you don’t water down the large batch cocktail.
  • Mocktail: To make non-alcoholic mojito mocktails, simply omit the rum and add more club soda to taste.
  • Lime Sugar Rim: If you want to get fancy with serving your mojitos I recommend rimming your cocktail glasses with a lime zest and sugar rim. See below for recipe!
  • Servings: recipe yields 6-8 cocktails.
Lime Zest Sugar Rim:
1/3 Cup Granulated Sugar
1 TBS Lime Zest, gently packed (about 1 large lime)
Lime Wedges
Directions:
  1. In a shallow bowl or small plate, combine the sugar and lime zest. (Use a bowl or plate big enough to hold your cocktail glass!)
  2. Use a lime wedge to wet the rim of a cocktail glass. Invert the glass and push the rim into the mixture of sugar and lime zest, rotating the glass in your hand to coat the entire rim in the sugar zest.
  3. Add ice, pour mojitos and enjoy!
