Hi friends!
Now that the weekend is over and school is officially back in session, I thought it would be fun to share with you one of Boy’s favorite sandwiches. Okay, so I know he doesn’t go to school, but he DOES go to work (make that money, hunny) and he absolutely still brown bags it.
And yes, on most occasions I pack his lunch. #RealLifeGoodWife
But, before we get to sando satisfaction, can we discuss fresh figs for 5.987 seconds?!
I have been seeing figs blow up on everyone’s social media feed and it is driving me CRAY. Why? Because I can’t seem to get my greedy little hands on ANY. Not a ONE.
Seriously, I have searched high and low; farmer’s markets, grocery stores, my neighbors yards, other people’s neighbor’s yards, local farms (even though we don’t live in California), ALL to NO avail. My obsession has gotten so bad, I have been having dreams of fig fairies hand feeding me silver platters of figs. In my dreams I am RIDICULOUSLY happy. And then I wake up. GRUMPY.
So if anyone wants to send me some figs, I’ll be your bestie for LIFE.
You’re probably wondering what in the helen-of-troy my obsession with figs has to do with sandwiches.
Well, short answer – EVERYTHING.
You see, while fresh, local produce may be seasonal and fleeting, there ARE a few little culinary joys in life that can ALWAYS be relied on. Pepperidge Farm®, Hillshire Farm® and Hellmann’s® happen to be some of them.
Since Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse ™ Oatmeal bread is slow baked with flavorful ingredients, Hillshire Farm® Thin Sliced Honey Ham lunchmeat contains no artificial flavors and Hellmann’s® Real Mayonnaise makes the perfect spread, when Boy requests a scrumptious sandwich for lunch, I know I can CONTINUALLY deliver.
…I just hope he doesn’t ask for fresh figs to go along side it.
Honey Ham & Pear Sandwich with Arugula & Manchego
This sandwich may seem simple, but it is the combination and quality of ingredients that makes it tastes amazing.
Hearty, lightly toasted Farmhouse Oatmeal Bread generously slathered with creamy Hellmann’s® mayonnaise; loaded with savory, slightly salty Hillshire Farm® thinly sliced honey ham, and topped with crisp, sweet pears, peppery baby arugula and piquant shaved manchego cheese.
GAH. Sandwich heaven!
The layers of flavors just complement each other PERFECTLY. Super simple, yet completely soul satisfying.
Notes, Tips & Tricks for Ham & Pear Sandwich recipe:
Since this IS a humble little sandwich, I don’t have any notes, just mere suggestions.
- All the ingredient measurements below are to my taste, but you should absolutely adjust them up or down according to yours.
- I used a mandolin to easily thinly slice the pear. Take the whole pear and glide it against the mandolin, lengthwise. When you reach the core, flip the pear over to the other side and repeat. Easy peasy, perfectly thin slices of pear every time.
- I used a cheese plane to shave the manchego, but a vegetable peeler would work just as well. Or you can simply use a knife and slice the cheese if shaved cheese isn’t your thing.
- I toasted the bread prior to assembling the sandwich, but I have made these as a pressed sandwich before and they taste amazing! To do so, simply assemble the sandwich and transfer it to a Panini press. Or, you could also turn this sandwich into a grilled cheese with a little mayo schmear on the outside and a moderately hot pan.
Get out of your rut and upgrade your lunch situation with these simple, yet delicious Ham & Pear Sandwiches! Until Thursday friends, cheers – to brown bag lunches being anything but boring.
XOXO

I’ve got to shop for pears because that looks like a great sandwich…love it.
rebecca | DisplacedHousewife
I have so many pears from my tree…thank you so much for showing me something delicious to do with them — I was running thin on ideas!!! xoxo
Kathy @ Beyond the Chicken Coop
You are indeed my ham sandwich twin! Love how these look! I’ve got ham….and right now I’ve got fresh pears ripening on my trees. Time to make these sammies!
Deb@glutenfreefarina
Love the combination of pears with manchego and arugula. And, I love the fig suggestion. I keep waiting for my new little fig tree to bear fruit cause there aren’t any fresh in SE Georgia. And, lately, I’ve been sauteing my fresh pears to get all that caramelized goodness out of them.
Anu – My Ginger Garlic Kitchen
I am seeing so many pear recipes these days and I want to try them all. But sadly, every time I buy pear I eat them just like that. ;( Pears, ham, arugula, and cheese sound like the divine combo ever. Just too good. Plus, I love sweet and salty things. So, this time, I will make sure to buy some extra because I want this beautiful and delicious sandwich in my life. Have a lovely week ahead! 🙂 <3
Cathy | whatshouldimakefor.com
i think my mantra is sweet and salty and you have nailed it with this sandwich! i pack my kids’ lunch daily and this is their fave bread. ham and mayo is a normal filler, but the manchego, pear and arugula is a major upgrade. i will be mom of the year when i pack this sandwich!

What? Chey, you’re the second person this week to say about THE GLOBAL FIG ISSUE. That’s horrible. I’m sending you a box of figs tomorrow, along with lavender (in case you desperately need it too). In a meanwhile, I’m glad you created this delicious sandwich. Pears, ham, arugula, and cheese? Mmmm, sounds good. I’m making this. Wait. Perhaps, I should grab fresh figs instead of pears, right?:)
Kathleen | Hapa Nom Nom
Girl… you are killing me! I have been craving deli meat like no one’s business and can’t have any! Although, this sandwich would still be pretty incredible without the ham – pear, arugula, and (one of my favorites) manchego?! Those ingredients alone as a sandwich are a fantastic ‘pearing’ 😛
Nicole @ Young, Broke and Hungry
Man, I need to get on my game and pack sandwiches like these for my boyfriend when he goes to work.

I went to the farmers market this weekend and didn’t see 1 fig there. I wonder if there is some kind of shortage. I haven’t checked neighbors yards yet lol. This sandwich looks delectable no wonder it’s a family favorite. 🙂
Ashley – The Recipe Rebel
But SERIOUSLY. If you only knew how much this girl loves a ham sandwich! It’s weird because you grow up hating sandwiches because you have to take them to school every day, and now when I have some honey ham it’s like a real treat! Lol. Love the pear and ham combo!
allie @ Through Her Looking Glass
Hey girl – I’ve got to try this sammie. LOVE IT. All these flavors you got going here are awesome.Yeah, figs would be nice. I saw some fresh figs at our local little Farm and Flower stand (ini farmer’s market) up the street last week. I looked at them for a while and tried to think what I’d do with them. I drew a big empty bubble over my head, so I didn’t get them. Sad, huh? Meanwhile, you’ve got them in your dreams. That’s ‘cuz you’re so incredibly creative my friend!!! Boy is lucky to have you making his lunch, that’s for sure. Can you believe I’ve never tried manchego??? Gotta do it, looks divine. Have a fabulous week my friend. XOXO
Jessica @ Citrus Blossom Bliss
I feel like such a terrible person for seeing signs in the grocery store for fresh figs and not even going over to take a peek. I’ve never had a fig anything because I have this irrational fear that I’ll hate how it tastes. I’m going to have to change that. P.S. I make the big man’s lunch too and he’s a big fan of sandwiches – this one looks amazing with all the flavors and freshness 😀 I wouldn’t mind packing myself one of these beauties for lunch too!
Alice @ Hip Foodie Mom
I loooovvveeee sandwiches like this! big and bursting with all kinds of goodness! Love the pear and Manchego is one of my fave cheeses and tastes even better melted!!!! and ok, I’ve got to try this oatmeal bread! I’ve seen it everywhere!!!
TammyRenea @SanPasqualsKitchen
The combination of flavors in this sandwich sound amazing. That picture of the double stack would be Dagwood Bumstead approved!!! Great job, Cheyanne!
Marsha | Marsha’s Baking Addiction
Now this is how you make a sandwich! Them layers look heavenly! I’ve not put ham and pear together before, but it sounds delicious!
Aww no, I hope you get your hands on some figs soon, I’d love to see the recipes you come up with using them!
karrie @ Tasty Ever After
Boy is damn lucky to have a sandwich makin’ wife like you! lol! I’m sure he appreciates you and your yummy sammies so much. Loving this pear/arugula/manchego combo. I could eat all three of those every day and be happy for the rest of my life. We are going camping at the end of the month so I’ll have to make a few of these to take hiking with us. I bet J will love them as much as Boy does 🙂
Marissa
What a combo in this sandwich – looks so good! I’d love this cold or smashed into gooey submission on a panini grill… 🙂
mira
I used to make similar sandwiches when I used to go to work . This looks perfect! Love figs, we have them here, need to get some 🙂 Pinning!
Sonali- The Foodie Physician
OMG, I couldn’t agree with you more about the fig situation! I’ve lost track of how many amazing figgy dishes I’ve seen on IG lately. But moving on to this sammy- it looks perfect! I kid you not, Manchego is my favorite cheese so that alone won me over but then you paired it with so many other wonderful ingredients! Btw, your Smashed Chipotle Chickpea Salad Sandwich looks awesome!
Rachel @ Bakerita
I’m seeing figs everywhere around here right now! Wish I could bring you some! This is definitely one delicious looking sandwich though…manchego is one of my favorite cheeses. So delicious!
Demeter | Beaming Baker
Hi friend! Go Boy on making the moola and earning his sandwich! 😉 I would be working extra hard if I knew you were gonna whip up something this special for moi. 🙂 Figs: Those darn things are eluding you still?? I remember you telling me about that a few weeks back… shoot. Who knew it was so hard to find fresh ones? Anyway, this bread, this sandwich and everything in it, look absolutely perfect. I want to be sitting at this table with the basket of chips and fancy drink. Coming over!! Lol. Have a great week friend! Can’t wait to see what you whip up next (for ME and Boy). 😉 Muah! xoxo
Emily
This sandwich looks delicious! What a fun flavor combination, too! #client

Cheyanne, you must make boy the happiest chappy ever – I mean – look at this sandwich! I’m thinking I need to find me a He-Cheyanne – cos, clearly, I need a fantastic sandwich maker in my life as my sandwich making skills are so awry! Hey – wait, better than that idea – what about another – I’ll bring you a wheelbarrow of figs (they are available aplenty here and where my mom lives, there’s a fig tree in the garden with SUPA fresh figs) …so back to what I was saying, I’ll bring you the figs and you prep me up a sandwich – or find me a He-Cheyanne? Thinking option 1 would be easier? You sure spot on – it’s the toppings and pairings that take a Shashi-created-Sandwich to a Cheyanne’s-work-of-beauty-AND-drool-unducing-decadence!
Amanda
Don’t feel bad. I can’t get a hold of any figs either. Maybe if I head a hundred miles in one direction or the other.
This sandwich looks downright blissful, Cheyanne! Ahh, Manchego cheese!
Stacey @ the sugar coated cottage
What a delicious sandwich! I bought a small container of figs but they weren’t as vivid in color or as beautiful as the ones I’m seeing online, I was bummed. I think it’s sweet u pack hubbies lunch, he’s lucky to get this sandwich. Take care!
Kevin | Keviniscooking
Love the flavors and textures in this sammy and I’d gladly eat it if you made me one. I would happily send you some figs from my tree, too. Sadly I can’t seem to eat them quick enough. Don’t hate me. We got a branch from a sub worker of Dave’s and stuck it in the ground 3 years ago and now it’s off the hook tall (7 feet!) and crazy with figs. Last year most were eaten by the birds, but this year I’ve plotted and planned to pick and make up test recipes to share. Got one coming up this Friday and last Friday was a killer fig dessert. Now send me an email with your address already so I can ship. Really. 🙂

We don’t have figs here either. It’s KILLING me. UGH. And yay for brown baggin’ it! I do everyday! I go through phases with my lunches. Sometimes salads, sometimes sandwiches, always leftovers 😉 This sandwich looks like one I NEED on my list. Love! XOXO
Ashley@CookNourishBliss
haha I totally pack the husband’s lunch as well! Most of my friends think I’m nuts for doing it but I love that you get me!! : ) 🙂 Just another reason I have a feeling we’re going to get along swimmingly in person (once all this crazy construction wraps up!!)
And this sandwich!! I LOVEEEEE manchego! And with the pears? Sounds amazing!
Gaila Perez
Oh Chey! I can see why this is Boy’s favorite!! sounds like a delicious combination, my husband comes home everyday at noon to eat with the girls! but I do brown bag it myself, and this is a winning combo!
Hugs my dear!!
Geraldine | Green Valley Kitchen
I love a good sandwich, Cheyanne – and this one is great. Never thought of adding pear and arugula to a salad but I bet the peppery arugula with the smooth slightly sweet pear is a wonderful combo. I hadn’t really thought about figs until you mentioned it and you’re right they are everywhere right now!
Jennifer @ Seasons and Suppers
Beautiful sandwich! Love each and every part of it and can only imagine how it tastes all together. Perfect 🙂 I only have one spot to find figs here in my part of the world, so I buy bunches when I see them. Such a nice treat this time of year.
annie@ciaochowbambina.com
This is a sandwich of dreams…seriously – what sandwich dreams are made of! As you can plainly see, I”m digging it! You know – I packed three sandwiches a day for a lot of years when the kids were in school – and when they finished, I stopped packing up lunches not thinking that Hubby might like a gorgeous lunch prepped and ready each day! Hahhaah- Oh no – I’m not going to let him see this post! Great lunch! Pinned! xoxo
Sues
Haha #RealLifeGoodWife is the best hashtag. I make my husband’s lunch pretty much every day, so I think I deserve to use that, too 🙂 This sandwich looks like perfection- loveee all of the pears involved!!
Dawn @ Girl Heart Food
I feel your pain on the fig situation!! I think I see them fresh around here once a year and they are subpar quality at best. I can find dried figs no problem, but where are the fresh ones, right ???
I pack hubby’s lunch too 🙂 And this looks like quite the sandwich! You are totally making me hungry right now with all these goodies and the whole savoury/sweet combo with the ham and pear. Arugula is one of my absolute faves! I could eat this for lunch every day and not get tired of it, I’m sure! Nice to have an alternate idea for lunch instead of the same old. Yum! Pinned sweets!
Have a fabulous week! xo

Looks like the type of sandwich the husband in the Blondie cartoons would dream about!
Gayle @ Pumpkin ‘N Spice
My husband still brown bags it to work too, and he’s always looking for new ways to spruce up his sandwiches. Wow does this look GOOD, Cheyanne! Definitely my kind of sandwich! I love the Manchego on here! Haven’t had that it forever, so it’s definitely calling my name. Love that Pepperidge Farm bread too…such a yummy meal, friend! Pinned of course! Hope your week is off to a great start!
Mary Ann | The Beach House Kitchen
I bet this is one of Boy’s favorites Chey! I love the combo you’ve got going in this one! That pear and manchego with that peppery arugula!…I’d eat it all day long. Lucky Boy! Enjoy your week! XO
Rachelle @ Beer Girl Cooks
Girl, I don’t know what in tarnation is going on over there, but we were up to our eyeballs in figs over here! They were giving them away – seriously, they were buy one get one free! This sandwich would certainly get me out of a fig frustration though! I would love to find that in my lunch box! Pinned!
Mir
I see fresh figs up here from time to time. I wish I could send some down your way!
Manchego cheese is my ABSOLUTE favorite in the world. I make this salad with manchego and green apple and chives and fennel and walnuts and it’s HEAVEN. But it’s also heaven in everything else, including the best sandwich you ever sent Boy to work with.
Hope your farmers markets get those figs in!
Kathryn @ Family Food on the Table
The pear, arugula and manchego definitely elevate this from humble sandwich to serious lunch envy status – delicious! What a good wifey 😉 Hope you come into some figs soon!! XO
Kate @ Framed Cooks
Sandwich heaven is RIGHT!! Man, I wish I had you packing my lunches for me, because that would make the morning full of anticipation for the deliciousness to come! Happy Monday my friend – sending good fig thoughts your way! xx

Now that’s a sandwich, Cheyanne. I love the combo of flavours, esp. the add of thinly sliced pears. Beautiful and delicious!
