Ingredients for savory cream cheese
You need three basic ingredients to make ultra-creamy, luxuriously-soft whipped cream cheese – block cream cheese, an enricher (Greek yogurt, sour cream or milk) and Worcestershire! You can use this basic whipped cream cheese recipe to create different specialty flavors, from chive cream cheese to walnut and honey cream cheese, and everything in between!
- Cream Cheese: You’ll need 8 ounces of room temperature cream cheese for this recipe. Be sure to use full-fat cream cheese for the absolute best texture and taste. Also, make sure your cheese is at room temperature for easy whipping!
- Substitution: You can substitute the yogurt for any thick, creamy condiment, such as sour cream, crème fraîche, ricotta, or even goat cheese, in equal amounts. Alternatively, you can omit the yogurt and use 1 tablespoon of milk or heavy cream to whip the cream cheese.
- Yogurt (enricher): The secret to perfect whipped cream cheese is to whip the cheese with an enriching ingredient, like Full-fat Greek yogurt. This addition gives your cheese spread a much lighter, airier, and creamier mouthfeel; while also bringing the distinctive tangy flavor to the forefront.
- Fresh Garlic: One grated clove of garlic provides subtle savory, aromatic notes.
- Chives: Mild fresh chives lend a delicious onion-and-garlic-like flavor.
- Scallions: Fresh green onions give the spread a fresh, slightly grassy and onion-like flavor.
- Worcestershire: A few splashes of Worcestershire sauce is the secret to the best tasting cream cheese spread! Tangy, savory, sweet and salty in flavor, Worcestershire adds a lot of umami flavor!
- Substitution: Swap in an equal amount of soy sauce or even fish sauce instead.
- Salt and Pepper: A generous pinch of kosher salt and ground black pepper ties all the flavors together.

Recipe variations
The beauty of homemade cream cheese spreads or dips is that you can make them exactly the way you want them. And, since this cream cheese recipe is super adaptable – the flavor combinations are endless. Below are some ideas to inspire:
- Herb and Garlic Cream Cheese. Give this recipe a boost by adding in a bit of garlic powder and swap the chives and scallions for your favorite combination of minced fresh herbs, like dill and parsley, oregano and thyme, or a pinch of Italian seasoning.
- Spicy Herb Cream Cheese. If you prefer a little heat, add some red pepper flakes, chili powder, or a dash of hot sauce. The spicy kick pairs beautifully with the creamy texture of the cheese, and the herbs balance out the heat.
- Cream Cheese with Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Basil, and Parmesan. Take your spread in an Italian direction by adding finely chopped sun-dried tomatoes and fresh basil to the mix. And, for extra depth consider mixing in freshly grated parmesan cheese.
- Cheddar and Chive Cream Cheese. For a cheesy flavor, try incorporating a little shredded sharp cheddar cheese into your herbed cream cheese. The cheddar creates a savory spread that’s ideal for sandwiches, wraps, or stuffing mushrooms.
- Dijon Mustard and Herb Cream Cheese. If you like tangy flavors, add a small spoonful of Dijon mustard to the mix. It gives the spread a subtle sharpness that’s a great option for sandwiches or as a dip for pretzels.
- Sweet Cream Cheese. Of course, for those with a sweet tooth, you can omit the Worcestershire and add a splash of maple syrup or honey instead. If you are a fan of sweet cream cheese spreads (think: the flavored cream cheeses at Panera), this will give you that sweet undertone that you are looking for.
- Add Bacon Bits! Omit the green onions from the recipe and add up to 10 slices of crispy-cooked and crumbled bacon or turkey bacon.
- Make it Vegan. Make a plant-based cream cheese dip by using vegan cream cheese and swapping the Worcestershire with dark soy sauce.

Follow these chef expert tips for the best success!
- Soften the cream cheese first. Always begin with cream cheese that is at room temperature to ensure it blends smoothly with the herbs, avoiding lumps. Let it sit out at about 20 to 30 minutes for that perfectly fluffy consistency.
- Use a stand mixer for quick work. If using a stand mixer with a large bowl, you’ll need to stop and scrape the sides of the bowl a few times.
- Whip cheese, then add yogurt (or milk). Make sure you whip the cream cheese before you add any other ingredient!
- Use Fresh Herbs for Maximum Flavor. For the best flavor, stick to fresh herbs and be sure to finely chop them so they evenly mix into the cream cheese.
- Get Creative with Add-ins. Aside from the luscious taste, to me, the best part of whipping cream cheese at home is the capability to flavor it any way I’d like. Experiment with extra flavoring ingredients, like crumbled bacon, chopped sun-dried tomatoes, and roasted red bell peppers to create YOUR perfect flavored cream cheese recipe.
- Let the Flavors Marinate. To get the most flavor out of your herb cream cheese spread, make it ahead of time and let it chill out in the fridge for a few hours, or overnight. This will give the herbs time to infuse into the cheese, creating a more flavorful spread.
- Consider the Texture You Want. If you’re aiming for a firmer spread, serve the herbed cream cheese straight from the fridge. Or, for a lighter, creamier dip, serve it closer to room temperature.
That’s it – all the secrets to the best cream cheese! Luxuriously light in texture and superior in taste, it’s perfect for slathering all the things!
FAQ: frequently asked questions
You’ve got questions? I’ve got answers! If you have a question you don’t see listed below, please drop them in the comments section. I’m happy to help when I can!
Can I use store-bought cream cheese for this recipe?
Absolutely – that’s what I’m using here. For the best texture, just be sure to soften the cream cheese to room temperature before whipping and flavoring. This helps it blend smoothly with the herbs and creates a creamy consistency.
What can I use if I do not have yogurt?
Yogurt adds a tangy creaminess to this whipped cream cheese recipe. However, you can use sour cream, crème fraîche or even ricotta in equal amounts. Or, if you are in a pinch, you can substitute whole milk, but use just 1 tablespoon to start.
What can I use as an alternative to Worcestershire?
You can try using a mix of soy sauce and hoisin sauce instead. You can also use balsamic vinegar, dark soy sauce, coconut aminos, or oyster sauce.
Why is my whipped cream cheese runny?
There are three reasons your homemade cream cheese turned runny.
- You didn’t whip the cream cheese first. You must whip the room temperature cream cheese first, before adding any other ingredient! Whipping the cream cheese creates air pockets which gives it a lighter, airier texture.
- Too much liquid. The purpose of whipping cream cheese with Greek yogurt or milk is to create a super light, perfectly spreadable consistency. However, if you add too much it will cause your cheese to become watery.
- You over-whipped the cream cheese. It is possible to over-mix your cream cheese spread! To prevent this from happening, don’t go above medium speed when mixing.
How do I make my herb cream cheese extra smooth?
There are a couple tricks to ensuring your savory cream cheese whips into a velvety-smooth texture:
- Room Temperature Cream Cheese. Make sure your cream cheese is fully softened before doing anything.
- Use a Hand Mixer, Stand Mixer, or Food Processor. For the smoothest consistency, use an electric mixer or food processor to blend the cream cheese with the herbs. This step helps break down any lumps and gives the spread a perfectly creamy finish.
- Whip Cream Cheese First, Then Add Flavor. For the fluffiest, creamiest results, whip the block of cream cheese to create tiny air pockets before adding any flavoring ingredients, such as fresh herbs like chives.
What other herbs can I add?
Feel free to get as creative as you’d like. If you love herbed cream cheese, mix in as many fresh herbs as you like, such as parsley, dill, thyme, or even tarragon to create your own signature cream cheese spread.
Can I use dried herbs instead of fresh?
Fresh herbs and fresh chives will provide a much more bright, vibrant flavor. However, you can swap in dried chives, a dry Italian seasoning mix, or various dry herbs if you’re in a pinch. Just keep in mind that dry herbs are more concentrated in flavor, so you’ll only need to use about 1/3 the amount.
Can I serve cream cheese with chives right away?
Sure, you can use your flavored cream cheese recipe right away! However, it is better to let the spread chill in the refrigerator for several hours to give time for the flavors to meld and marry. I recommend making a big batch of deli-style cream cheese and storing it in the refrigerator for easy usage!

Nothing beats a perfectly fluffy and perfectly flavored cream cheese spread! Whether you’re slathering bagels or stuffing your sandwich wraps, this easy whipped herb and chive cream cheese recipe makes everything taste better!
Until next time, friends, cheers!

In the Netherlands we don’t have a block of cream cheese but we do have soft ready-made cream cheese (Philadelphia for example). Can I use this too?
Cheyanne Holzworth
Hi Lise,
That’s a fantastic question. Unfortunately, I’ve never been to the Netherlands so while I haven’t specifically tried the product you mentioned, I’m fairly certain your cream cheese is simply softer and slightly creamier than the block style I reference. I would just beat the cream cheese for a few seconds (again, I believe yours is already soft) and add the flavoring ingredients. You may not need to add any yogurt at all. I would definitely do this by person preference and taste.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions as I’m always happy to help when I can.
Cheers and warmest wishes for a lovely day,
