Ingredients for yogurt whip

As promised, you only need a handful of ingredients to make this delightful whipped yogurt recipe. Here’s what to grab:

  • Full-Fat Greek Yogurt – Make sure you’re reaching for a minimum of 5% milkfat for the best, most decadent results.
    • Feel free to swap in full-fat labneh if you’d like. You can also use full-fat vegan Greek-style yogurt or Skyr if needed.
  • Cold Heavy Cream – “Cold” is the operative word here. Cold fat holds its structure better, allowing you to get luscious peaks in this whipped dessert topping. Regular whipping cream also works — you just need a minimum of 30% milkfat.
    • If you’re dairy-free, feel free to use your favorite vegan whipping cream instead.
  • Honey – For adding unrefined sweetness with a lovely floral undertone. If possible, opt for local honey for the best, most complex taste.
    • Other sweetening options include maple syrup or agave nectar.
  • Vanilla – For adding warmth and depth.
    • You’re welcome to use an equal amount of vanilla paste or vanilla powder. You can also swap in different flavored extracts (e.g. almond, maple, or lemon) or use liquor or liqueurs (e.g. rum, bourbon, amaretto, or triple sec) instead.
  • Salt – It sounds weird, but a touch of seasoning helps sweet things taste sweeter. We only need a pinch!
    • If you’re following a salt-free diet, consider using lemon or lime zest instead.

Optional variations

Making this light and fluffy whipped cream with greek yogurt gives you all the flexibility you have with regular whipped cream. In other words, you can totally customize it to your liking! Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

  • Vegan/Dairy-Free – If you and lactose aren’t friends, not to worry. Simply swap in dairy-free Greek-style yogurt and whipping cream. You’re also welcome to use a vegan sweetener like maple, agave, or simple syrup to make it completely vegan-friendly.
  • Add-Ins – There are tons of options to choose from! Here are some of my favorites:
  • Different Extracts – Add or swap in your favorite extracts or flavored bitters to make your yogurt whip match your meal. Think: maple extract for layering on waffles and pancakes, lemon extract for layering with berries, or coffee extract for serving with granola.
  • Essential Oils – If you have food grade essential oils, you can add tons of flavor with just a few drops. Citrus fruits like grapefruit or lemon, warming spices like cinnamon or cardamom, or herbs like mint or coriander are all great candidates.
  • Zest – Add some zip to your yogurt whipped topping by adding a few rasps of your favorite citrus zest.
  • Powders – Amp up the flavor of your Greek yogurt whip by whisking some sifted cocoa powder, instant coffee powder, or matcha powder into the cream before beating it into the yogurt.
  • Spices – From tangy sumac to warming cinnamon, there’s a whole world of flavor waiting in your pantry.
  • Fresh Herbs – Adding a chiffonade of basil, mint, or tarragon adds flavor and color to this yummy whipped cream yogurt frosting.
  • Syrups – Feel free to use either store-bought or homemade coffee or cocktail syrups to add fun flavor.

How to make whipped yogurt

Making whipped cream with yogurt is a snap. Here’s how it’s done:

  • Gather ingredients: Collect and measure the yogurt, ¼ cup of cream, honey, vanilla, and salt. Add everything to the bowl of a stand mixer or use a large mixing bowl and hand mixer.
  • Beat Yogurt and Cream: Starting on the LOWEST speed, beat the ingredient together for about 20-30 seconds, or until the cream and yogurt start to come together. Once they start to mix, slowly increase the speed until you reach the HIGHEST speed. Beat for 1 ½ minutes.
  • Scrape bowl: Stop the mixer and use a rubber spatula to scrape down the sides and the bottom of the bowl.
  • Beat Greek Yogurt Again: Continue beating the Greek yogurt on HIGH speed for about 2-3 minutes, or until the mixture is thick and slightly stiff peaks form when you remove the whisk.
  • Taste and Adjust: Taste the whipped Greek yogurt and adjust for taste and consistency as you see fit, adding more honey for sweetness and more cream (one tablespoon at a time) for a thinner consistency. Make sure you beat the mixture after making any adjustments.
  • Use Yogurt Whip or Store For Later: Serve whipped yogurt with your favorite fresh fruits, crackers, and cookies; layer it in parfaits and trifles, or enjoy plain. Alternatively, you can store the Greek yogurt in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the fridge.

Expert tips for the best whipped Greek yogurt

While this recipe for yogurt and whipped cream deliciousness is pretty straightforward, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Go For Broke. DO NOT use fat-free yogurt when making this healthier whipped cream. It won’t hold it’s shape as well and won’t taste as good as if you use the real deal.
  • Stretch After Rest. Whipped Greek Yogurt will thicken slightly during storage. Simply drizzle in a little bit of cream and re-whip the yogurt before serving as needed.
  • Through Thick or Thin. If you want to use the whipped yogurt as a base for parfaits or as a layer in desserts, I recommend using just ¼ cup of heavy cream to keep the yogurt mixture nice and thick. If you want to use the whipped Greek yogurt as a topping, I like to thin it slightly by using 1/3 cup of cream.

FAQs: frequently asked questions

Can you whip yogurt?

Absolutely! You can definitely whip yogurt, particularly if it’s full-fat Greek yogurt! (If you have plain regular yogurt, you can whip that too — just make sure to strain it through a cheesecloth-lined mesh strainer to remove excess whey before starting.)

Can you whip store-bought greek yogurt?

Whether it’s homemade or store-bought, Greek yogurt is a fantastic candidate for whipping up into a delightful treat. Just make sure it’s the plain, unsweetened, full-fat kind – that’s the secret to achieving that wonderful whipped perfection.

What happens when you whip greek yogurt?

When you whip Greek yogurt, something magical happens. It transforms from its usual creamy texture into a light and airy dream, almost like a cloud of yumminess. The process aerates the yogurt, giving it a lovely, whipped consistency that’s perfect for all sorts of creations and can be used as a healthier stand-in for regular whipped cream.

Can you whip greek yogurt with cream?

You can whip Greek yogurt with or without cream — that’s totally up to you, boo!

If you choose to whip Greek yogurt with cream, you’ll create a lusciously rich and creamy texture that’s a lot like actual whipped cream. It’s perfect for topping desserts, parfaits, or using as a decadent dip for fruits.

Can you whip greek yogurt without cream?

On the other hand, if you prefer a lighter and tangier whipped yogurt, you can skip the cream altogether. This version is fantastic for those who prefer a healthier option and want to enjoy the natural goodness of Greek yogurt without added fat.

Can I use yogurt instead of Cool Whip?

Using yogurt works like a charm in loads of recipes, like fruity salads, yummy parfaits, and certain no-bake pies. It’s a fun way to add a twist and keep things fresh!

But, fair warning, yogurt might not hold up as well as Cool Whip in recipes that need to hang out in the freezer or the fridge for a long time. It can get a bit watery over the hours. No worries, though! If you want to use yogurt and keep that perfect texture, consider adding gelatin or another thickener to keep it in check.

You’re in for such a treat with this whipped Greek yogurt, I can’t wait for you to dig in! Here are some fun serving suggestions to get you started:

  • Balsamic Bliss: Fold in a chiffonade of basil and adding a drizzle of balsamic vinegar reduction on top. It’s perfect for serving with macerated berries!
  • Berrylicious Parfait: Serve the whipped Greek yogurt in layers with fresh strawberries and your favorite granola for a delightfully colorful yogurt parfait.
  • Fluffy Whipped Topping: Whip the Greek yogurt with 1/3 – 1/2 cup of heavy cream until it’s super airy and light. Use this dreamy whipped topping to dollop on pancakes, waffles, fruit bowls, cakes, and even puddings.
  • Peaches: Oh, this one’s my fave! Dollop the whipped Greek cream on top of honey-grilled peaches for a decadent and fruity dessert. Garnish with fresh mint for a pop of color and dig in.
  • Popsicles: Layer with your favorite fresh fruit in a popsicle mold to create delicious and healthy yogurt pops.
  • Dippity Dip: Serve the whipped yogurt as a delightful dip alongside a platter of fresh fruit, graham crackers, or cinnamon-sugar pita chips
  • Tropical Twist: Mix in some toasted coconut flakes and serve with diced tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, and kiwi for a taste of paradise!
  • Choco-Heaven: Satisfy your chocolate cravings by folding in a spoonful of cocoa powder and a drizzle of homemade chocolate syrup into the whipped yogurt. Enjoy it with sliced bananas or as a dip for pretzels.
  • Lemon Zest: Add a refreshing twist by grating some lemon zest into the whipped Greek yogurt. It’s perfect for serving with fresh blueberries or as a tangy topping on fruit crisps.
  • Coffee Infusion: Mix in a splash of coffee extract or a spoonful of instant coffee powder for a delightful coffee-flavored whipped yogurt. Top it on your favorite coffee-flavored treats, like my favorite coffee mug cake in microwave or coffee cake with chocolate. Or enjoy it on its own!

Storing leftovers

  • After whipping the Greek yogurt, promptly use it or transfer it to a clean, airtight container in the fridge. It should keep well for 3-4 days.
  • When storing in the fridge, make sure to keep your whipped Greek yogurt away from liquids or fruits with high water content. This will help prevent excess moisture from seeping into the yogurt and affecting its texture.
  • If you find that this whipped topping has softened slightly after refrigeration, you can give it a quick re-whip with a whisk or mixer to restore its fluffy texture.
  • Whipped Greek yogurt doesn’t freeze well. Freezing can cause it to separate and change in texture, resulting in an undesirable consistency.

Notes

    • Idea 2: Use 1/3 cup - ½ cup of heavy cream to whip the yogurt and use as a whipped topping dolloped on pancakes, waffles, fruit bowls, puddings, and more. My favorite way to use this is dolloped on honey grilled peaches.
  • Storage: Whipped Greek Yogurt will thicken slightly during storage. Simply drizzle in a little bit of cream and re-whip the yogurt before serving.
